Although it is necessary for<br \/>\ncircuit-switched calls to transmit a packet periodically, the same<br \/>\nis not true for packet-switched calls. It is possible to achieve<br \/>\ncapacity savings and extend battery life for VoIP calls by using a<br \/>\ndiscontinuous transmission scheme (DTX).<\/p>\n<p>This specification provides requirements for source controlled<br \/>\nvariable rate vocoders to implement DTX. It is recognized that<br \/>\nthere exists a great deal of flexibility in the way DTX can be<br \/>\nimplemented.
