A pilot/demonstration study was conducted on three treatment technologies-the fluidized bed biological reactor (FBBR) process, the activated sludge process incorporated with iron flocculation, and the ultraviolet light-hydrogen peroxide (UV-H2O2) process-to evaluate their effectiveness in the treatment of petroleum marketing terminal wastewater contaminated with methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE). Contaminated groundwater was the primary constituent of the wastewater, which contained 3 to 4 mg/L of benzene, toluene, xylenes, and ethylbenzene (BTEX). MTBE in the wastewater varied from 0.5 to 10 mg/L.
