ESDU 88034, after a general introduction to buckling, provides data on the buckling stress for overall buckling of a strut with various end conditions and making allowance for initial imperfections. For open cross-section struts, the prediction of both torsional and torsional-flexural buckling is treated, together with local buckling. For tubular section struts, both local and torsional buckling are considered. Curves are provided for the prediction of buckling of a rectangular plate with various edge conditions under biaxial compression or combined biaxial compression and tension. Curves also provide estimates of the buckling stress for the plate under pure shear with any combination of clamped or simply-supported edges, and for the plate under uniaxial compression with in-plane bending. Buckling of the free edge of a triangular gusset plate is considered, and data are included on the lateral instability of a uniform beam or cantilever under various lateral loading conditions. All the data relate to the onset of buckling, but reference is made to other ESDU work that includes the effect of material plasticity.
