]]>
This information report is being issued to cover conversions from inch-pound units to those in the System International (SI) approach. Since all conversions cannot possibly be covered, the list contained in Section 4 is composed of the lighting oriented items which are found in SAE or Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (MVSS) in North America. This reference is to FMVSS in the United States and to CMVSS in Canada. The purpose of this report is to give guidance for uniformity particularly to those organizations, governmental or otherwise, who may in the future have occasion to express present inch-pound units in metric or SI terms.

This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) will specify what type night vision goggles are required, minimum requirements for compatible crew station lighting, aircraft exterior lighting such as anticollision lights and position/navigation lights that are "NVG compatible." Also, this document is intended to set standards for NVG utilization for aircraft so that special use aircraft such as the Coast Guard, Border Patrol, Air Rescue, Police Department, Medivacs, etc., will be better equipped to chase drug smugglers and catch illegal immigrants, rescue people in distress, reduce high-speed chases through city streets by police, etc. Test programs and pilot operator programs are required.
For those people designing or modifying civil aircraft to be NVG compatible, the documents listed in 2.1.3 are essential.

This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) covers the general design and performance characteristics of illuminated information signs for service in the passenger compartment of passenger transport aircraft. Relating to regulations, this ARP covers regulations that have been harmonized with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA); if there are any differences, the applicant should review the appropriate regulations.
"Illuminated information signs" are lighted signs used to inform occupants of the passenger compartment. Signs may use symbols or letters to convey messages.
This ARP does not apply to "EXIT" signs, which are the subject of ARP503.

To enable people to perform visual tasks efficiently and accurately, especially during the night, adequate and appropriate lighting has to be provided.

The degree of visibility and comfort required in a wide range of outdoor work places is governed by the type and duration of activity.

This Standard specifies the lighting requirements related to the amount and quality of lighting which will contribute to the visual needs for safety, easiness, efficiency and comfort for performing tasks within outdoor work places or other areas related thereto.

This Standard does not provide explanation on how the lighting systems should be designed to a resolve a specific problem, nor does it restrict the freedom of designers to adopt a new technology, or use of new equipment or device.

NOTE 1 For methods of designing the lighting systems and technologies to optimize a specific visual environment, related Guides and Reports of the International Commission on Illumination (Commision Internationale de lEclairage, hereafter referred to as CIE) and standards issued by the Illuminating Engineering Institute of Japan should be referred to.

NOTE 2 The International Standards corresponding to this Standard and the symbol of degree of correspondence are as follows:

CIE S 015: 2005 Lighting of outdoor work places

ISO/CIE 8995-3: 2006 Lighting of work places-Part 3: Lighting requirements for safety and security of outdoor work places

(Overall evaluation: MOD)

The symbols which denote the degree of correspondence in the contents in the corresponding International Standard and JIS are IDT (identical), MOD (modified) and NEQ (not equivalent) according to ISO/IEC Guide 21-1.
