The principles of human performance are introduced to explain how human errors arise and how improved operational competence can be achieved. A range of techniques for qualitative and quantitative assessment and improvement of human reliability are provided.<\/p>\n<p>The application of these guidelines and techniques can help to optimize human performance in process\/product design through the inclusion of human reliability considerations throughout the product life cycle.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><i>NOTE 1 It is not intended to provide engineers with the competence to solve all human reliability problems, but to provide an awareness of their potential to exist.
