The document aims to<\/p>\n

    specify the minimal characterizing generic concepts<\/i> in herbal medicament<\/i> (3.2) within terminological systems<\/i> (3.8), that are required for terms used to identify of herbal medicines regulated by medicine regulatory agencies<\/i> (3.10), and<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    facilitate the consistency and interoperability of the terms<\/i> and their designating concepts in terminological systems<\/i>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In order to achieve these goals, this document specifies the minimal compositional concept representation<\/i> of herbal medicament for use in terminological systems<\/i> (3.8), while expressing semantic links<\/i> and characterizing categories<\/i> for formal definitions<\/i>, with a set of domain constraints<\/i> in the subject field<\/i>[<\/sup>6<\/sup>] [<\/sup>7<\/sup>]<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

    Herbal medicaments<\/i> (3.2) can be classified into<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. \n

      single herbal medicament (SHM), and<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    2. \n

      herbal medicament composed of several kinds of SHM.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      \n

      NOTE Single herbal medicament is composed of only one herbal medicament. Herbal medicament composed of several kinds of SHMs<\/i> is conventionally called \u201cformula.\u201d This document is not intended to include the mixture of formulae.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

      The specific intended use of this compositional concept representation<\/i> is to<\/p>\n

        \n
      • \n

        provide a well-structured backbone for terminological systems<\/i>,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n

        clarify the synonymy, homonymy and polysemy across different clinical specialties and terminological resources,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n

        promote meaningful exchange of information among different terminological systems,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n

        promote consistency and interoperability or re-use of terms among different terminological systems,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n

        facilitate the representation of herbal medicines in a manner suitable for computer processing,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n

        support developers and maintainers of terminological resources<\/i> (3.7) to facilitate conformance,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n

        support knowledge management on herbal medicines with facilitating analysis of concerned data, and<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n

        support the reduction of confusion in trade and of health hazard in consequence.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        The following topics are out of scope for this document:<\/p>\n

        • \n

          any implementation models or database schemas, and manufacturing models;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        • \n

          any models or frameworks for quality control, and models for chemical and physical characteristics;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        • \n
